From the humble roller’s very beginnings as horse drawn equipment aimed at farms, they have been popular. They are extremely efficient for their intended use, namely flattening things! Rollers are frequently found today at roadworks, ensuring that surfaces are smooth and pristine for our vehicles. Due to the need for significant weight, horse drawn versions were eventually replaced by self powered machines from the mid 19th century. These compaction machines were powered by steam, and designed to bounce and vibrate for greater impact.
Steam rollers were used extensively in the UK until the late 1970’s, and were gradually replaced by petrol and diesel powered versions.
In 1957, Karl Heinz Schwamborn founded BOMAG, who have evolved to produce an exceptional range of rollers. He developed the double vibratory roller with all-drum drive in the same year, then a 7 tonne double vibratory roller. This was the first of its kind in the world, and the company continued to innovate year on year. BOMAG’s branch office in Austria was followed by further branches in China, France, Italy, America, Japan, Canada, Hungary and the UK. Schwamborn sold the company in 1970 to American company Koehring, who sold it in 2001 to US SPX Corporation. It was then sold once again in 2005 to French group Fayat.
BOMAG has a long and impressive history, and an enviable reputation, which is why they feature so prominently within our range.
We have a great choice of rollers for every job, whether it’s compaction for smaller areas or major on site projects. Some can be manually pushed along or driven, such as our 80 and 120 tandem rollers. They feature dual drum vibration, and come in varying sizes and weights, all of which pack a punch. You will frequently see rollers where there is ongoing work on pavements, roads, embankments or railways. Compact or manual rollers are extremely useful for those carrying out gardening or landscaping tasks.
One of their important jobs involves preparing building foundations, which need a solid and uncompromising base. These rollers ensure that no small pockets of air can cause problems later when buildings are completed.
