Heavy & Small Plant Hire Wembley, Compact Excavators for Commercial or Domestic Projects
Not all construction projects run smoothly or manage to stay within their financial targets, and many take a lot longer than intended. Take the building of the new Wembley Stadium which went ever so slightly over budget! The project started in 2002, and was dogged with problems from start to finish. The planned cost of the structure was £757m, but the final cost was £1bn, an increase of 32%. Apparently in the world of high end construction, this isn’t that unusual, however that’s not where the expense ended. Thanks to a lengthy and complex dispute, the cost of legal bills alone was well in excess of £45m. There were issues relating to roof design, ground works and the famous arch. A staggering £1m was spent just on photocopying because of the ongoing legal claims.
The contractors Multiplex won their claim in court yet still lost £2m, resulting in the 2007 sale of the business, which had been successful for 43 years. The telegraph reported that the Australian group was “immortalised in British sporting and construction annals by its dismal performance in building the new Wembley Stadium”.
Wembley Stadium has been the acknowledged home of football for over three quarters of a century. It was one of the buildings that showcased Britain as global leaders in concrete construction. The stadium, along with buildings for the British Empire Exhibition of 1924, was designed and composed completely of concrete. The famous Wembley lion statues plus lamp posts, bridges and ornamental features were all cast in concrete. The build was completed in 300 days, and took more than 25,000 tonnes of concrete along with 600 tonnes of steel reinforcement rods.
