There have been many exciting building projects completed throughout Essex and London in places like Cheshunt, such as the £5.5 million redevelopment of Cheshunt School. The project, which was 20 years in the making, was officially opened in November 2016 by MP Charles Walker OBE. The school website posted regular updates and images of the progress being carried out including demolition of the old music block, the laying of the foundations and construction of the steel framework. Vision panels were added to the hoardings in order to allow the students to view the ongoing proceedings when not in lessons. The students found this quite fascinating as diggers, cranes and loaders trundled around, while they watched the formation of their new school.

The work carried on without a hitch, through storms and freezing winter weather, and even when the nights closed in and light was insufficient. By the 2016 Easter break the building had it’s roof, walls, doors and windows and was weather tight, so internal works and décor were embarked upon. Once finished, local and county councillors, builders, architects, staff, governor reps and students witnessed the cutting of the ribbon, which signified a new beginning for the area and part of a larger development. The overall redevelopment includes the creation of more than 88 family homes on disused land, which it is hoped will provide an vast improvement for the community.

The major artery of any community is it’s network of schools, and the new Cheshunt school will bring state of the art technology with science facilities, design, maths, IT, art, drama and music. Charles Walker OBE MP stated: “The opening of this wonderful new building marks a new beginning for Cheshunt School. Everyone involved in this project is deserving of congratulations. But most importantly, the children are so proud of their new classrooms and facilities. There is just an overwhelming sense of energy and purpose coursing through the classrooms and corridors.” A tour of the school was on the agenda for dignitaries, lead by members of the school’s student executive who are proud ambassadors of the school.
