The new homes in Fossetts Way, off Eastern Avenue, Southend, will comprise of 32 flats and 189 houses on a 15 acre plot. More of these will be affordable homes, than are actually required by the council. They will total 68, where the council state the amount should be 30% [approx 66]. More than 1,000 new homes are expected to be erected close to the proposed Southend United stadium at Fossetts Farm. There is already another development nearby with 200 new homes.
Although the Government’s targets being met is extremely positive, some have reservations about the changes. They feel there should be more focus on possible impacts to infrastructure, roads, schools and healthcare. The area east of the borough is the biggest concern, according to vice Chairman of Shoeburyness Residents’ Association, Peter Lovett. He said: “We keep building more and more houses but they have got to get the infrastructure right. That area is already chock-a-block at peak times.
“There could be another 400 cars. It’s absolutely crazy. Someone needs to take up the challenge of infrastructure because businesses can’t get in and out of Shoebury as it is.”
Objections also included the fact that five trees had been removed in preparation [although 145 are due to be planted]. But overall the application was supported by town planners who said: “the proposed development would, on balance, be acceptable and compliant with the objectives of the relevant local and national policies and guidance. The proposal is acceptable in principle and provides an appropriate dwelling mix.
