Welfare units are increasingly to be found on construction sites whatever the size of job, and are a highly practical and functional addition. The Health & Safety Executive [HSE] produced a paper pointing out the need for these mobile units. They play a huge part in keeping workers feeling comfortable and energised. The HSE advice is aimed at site managers, and those with responsibility for workers while onsite.
The paper offers guidance on the minimum that should be provided for construction workers. Perhaps the most important thing is access to adequate toilet and of course wash facilities. Somewhere to get warm and have their lunch is also high on the list, as is a place to store clothing. Many of these priorities are often neglected, which can lead to difficulty working and sometimes health conditions such as dermatitis.
Each construction project manager should consider the availability of welfare facilities, where they will be sited and who will maintain them etc. This should be noted at the planning stage, and before any work begins. Certain types of project may require a specific facility, if for instance the work involves extremely dirty work. Jobs could include sewer work, contamination, demolition dust or wet, poured concrete. In these cases, welfare units will need hot showers or proper washing facilities.
Other pointers have to be taken into consideration such as the distance from the work activity to the mobile cabin. The length of the project and how many different locations are involved that will mean moving the unit are also important. The amount of people expected to use the unit and who will clean it should be looked at.
The mobile cabin chosen for construction staff should have clean, fresh drinking water, and there should be kettles, microwaves and heating. Overall a restful, relaxing environment must be created, and one where workers can escape the wind and rain. Changing rooms and lockers are a handy addition, and are appreciated by workers, as clean clothes are kept separate from work clothes. Drying rooms are also a welcome feature of our hire welfare units.
Personal items are always a bit of a problem on site, and secure storage is needed for things like mobile phones, wallets and keys. This is why Boss Cabins have included secure and safe storage in their welfare units.
The HSE paper goes on to list several other requirements needed to fully satisfy the safety and wellbeing of workers while onsite. All of these suggestions are provided by our range of Boss Welfare Cabins, available in a selection of sizes and specifications to perfectly suit your needs. They can be used as rest spaces, canteens, wash and toilet facilities, offices and meeting places, storage areas and anything else you can think of.
