UKRI is a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). They have an ambitious agenda and work to promote all things technical and innovative. The Transforming Construction Challenge, is backed by £170m in research and innovation investment. This is matched by £250m from industry, aiming to create new building processes and techniques of construction manufacture in the UK.
Inferior Planning leads to Urban Crime
Sam Stacey is the challenge director of the initiative, and says he felt for a long time that construction was not reflecting the needs of society. Inferior planning and design resulted in urban decay and an increase in crime. Eventually he felt he was sufficiently skilled and knowledgeable to lead the push for change. He believes we now have the capacity to transform what and how we build.
Sam Stacey says that construction industry turnover in the UK is bigger than aerospace and automotive combined at £110bn. He also maintains that the sector has remained trapped in a cycle of low innovation and deficient productivity. Generous government support has, in the past, been available for other industry sectors contributing to their advanced status.
