If you keep reading about Hydrogen power, it’s because it seems to be the next big thing in energy efficiency. Many industries are looking into the viability of hydrogen as a way to reduce carbon emissions. Even major manufacturers of plant machinery such as Cat, Kubota, Bomag and Hyundai are taking on the hydrogen revolution. These are among a number of manufacturers who are overcoming obstacles, and developing more energy efficient products. The goal for all of these companies is integrating their products with high-performing, cost-effective technologies.
Market leaders Cat, have announced that they will be offering generator sets that can operate on 100% hydrogen, with fully renewable green hydrogen. They will be produced on a designed-to-order basis from late 2021. Before then, they intend to launch power generator solutions which can be operated on a blend of natural gas and 25% hydrogen.
Hyundai have, along with Hyundai Motor Group, been developing the world’s first hydrogen-powered plant equipment. Together with Hyundai Mobis, the companies carry out research and development of hydrogen powered forklifts and excavators. This endeavour began in 2020 and the machines are intended for mass distribution in 2023. There are a variety of ongoing projects aiming to change the landscape from a carbon based fuel economy to a Net-Zero ecosystem.
The government has published a plan called the Hydrogen Strategy, which it hopes will raise awareness and promote hydrogen as an alternative source of fuel. It proposes to work alongside industry to meet it’s target of 5GW of hydrogen production capacity by 2030. Hydrogen could be set to replace natural gas in around three million homes in the UK. Transport and industry are also destined to benefit from the transition to this core low carbon power source. You never know, you may eventually see hydrogen powered plant machinery working away on sites in places like Potters bar!
