Work has finally resumed on the £2.95million pedestrianisation scheme for Braintree town centre, one of its most significant regeneration projects. The project, which began in 2020, will see a new public space created as most of the high street, Market Place and Great Square are pedestrianised. There have been a few hiccups along the way, resulting in the work being put on hold, but completion is now expected this year. A new construction company has been contracted by Braintree Council to finish the remaining stages of the work.
The vision for this regeneration project is for a multi-purpose area providing space and opportunity for future events and entertainment. This will encourage more people to visit, which will help to boost the local economy and improve the lives of all concerned including businesses. Added to the surroundings are one-level paving, CCTV, street furniture, Wi-Fi hotspots, trees and new seating areas. The multi-million pedestrianisation scheme is part of a major town centre investment, and runs alongside the £30 million Victoria Square development.
Braintree’s corporate director for growth at the council said: “We are pleased we are now able to progress with the final stages of construction work across the town centre as part of this scheme.
“We are working with the new contractor to provide a programme of work that will reduce the impact of the delay to the completion of the project as a whole and we are confident that we will be able to move across the town centre at pace.
“The project will see a fantastic new and safer public space for future events, and play a key part in our town centre bouncing back from the impacts of the pandemic.”
