When dumpers were designed they provided an excellent solution to the problem of moving large amounts of debris, soil, concrete etc from A to B. Early dumper models in the UK had a payload of around one ton, were 2-wheel drive and steered by the back wheels. They had a single cylinder diesel engine which had to be hand cranked to start, and there were no electrics or hydraulics to assist the operator. The skip was manually maneuvered and tipped via a catch near the foot of the driver.
Our dumpers are manufactured by leading brand Thwaites, who started as ‘Thwaites Agricultural Engineering’ in 1937. They produced milking machines, harvesters, tractors and trailers, and in the late 1940’s they came up with a mechanical Brick Elevator. Their first dumper had three wheels, a 6 horse power single cylinder Petter engine and a three speed gear box. A four wheeled version followed in 1953, and a year later they changed their name to ‘Thwaites Engineering Ltd’, This name modification signalled a change of direction as the company dropped the production of agricultural machinery.
As the company grew they developed new and innovative machines, such as the ‘Multi-Skip’. This was an inter changeable skip carrier, and subsequent models included the ‘Tusker’. This multi-purpose chassis featured removable skips and a backhoe attachment could be fitted to it. In 1962 they introduced the 4 wd “Alldrive”, which had a 2 ton capacity, and that could ‘go were other dumpers can not go’. In 1965 a 3 ton machine appeared, and eventually in 1974 we saw the 5 ton ‘Goliath’.
Competitor Joe Bamford (JCB) was apparently so annoyed by Basil Thwaites adding a ‘Digger Dumper’ to his range that he followed suit. He introduced a small JCB dumper to his own range, which looked remarkably similar to the Thwaites model. The JCB dumper never really took off and was eventually dropped.
The next Thwaites update was the 2 ton ‘Alldrive 4000’, and subsequently an 8 ton ‘Goliath’ in the early 1980’s. By this time most of their range had torque-converter transmissions with shuttle reverse. New higher capacity machines emerged in the mid 1990’s. By now Perkins engines had replaced the Lister and Petter engines. This was a bit of a death knell for Lister, who had already been falling behind with their designs. Perkins engines had a number of advantages, one being the fact that their water cooled engines were much quieter. Unfortunately for Lister, other manufacturers followed Thwaites lead and began to favour Perkins and Deutz engines.
