The construction industry in Essex areas like Braintree is undergoing some exciting changes thanks partly to an innovative addition to Braintree College. The new STEM Centre at Braintree College, is part of the ‘Education and Industry STEM Programme’, and will give the local industry a huge boost. It is hoped that the centre will inspire young people to pursue careers in the construction industry which has had a bit of a wobble in recent years.
The project was actually a conversion/refurbishment beginning in 2016, which has seen a large sports hall transformed into a state of the art facility, fully equipped to offer courses in science, mathematics and engineering. The work saw the installation of a large steel frame into the sports hall, in order to create a second storey to incorporate teaching spaces and engineering workshops. The college will feature highly technical electrical, mechanical and IT installations designed to meet the colleges high demands for welding equipment, air extraction, CNC machinery and IT equipment. Cadman Construction formed in 1932, are the contractors for the project, and have completed many successful building projects.
There is a special day planned on 21 May 2018, which is open to all Essex secondary schools. The event aims to highlight learning options and career opportunities within engineering specifically related to the Essex area. Colchester Institute staff will present a mix of industry led workshops and presentations that will be engaging and interactive.
The proof of the pudding will be to see how many students report improved awareness and understanding of what is available career wise within the industry. They will also hopefully enhance their perception of how to achieve the relevant qualifications, via courses and career pathways.
The construction industry incorporates a variety of worthwhile and rewarding careers, and newly formed companies can benefit from hiring their plant, tools and equipment as a way of limiting initial financial outlay.
