A primary school in Woodford Green has had the green light for work involving the demolition of a two storey building. The project will then see the erection of a three storey building and a roof extension for another two storey building. Woodford Green Prep school, also called ‘The Red School’ because of its red uniform, will also benefit from associated landscaping work. In addition, a refurbishment of the Whitfield Building will be carried out along with a roof extension.
Architects Buckley Gray Yeoman, submitted plans to replace the existing structure, and produce a multi purpose space for events, a light-filled art room, and six new classrooms. Nick Wharton, Buckley Gray Yeoman associate said: ‘This bold new addition to Woodford Green Prep School will provide spacious and light-filled teaching space alongside multi-functional space for school and wider community use. ‘By making the community use clearly visible from the street, we have sought to create a space which the community will recognise as a new local amenity as well as a high-quality learning environment for the school.’
The new accessible extension will benefit from a semi sprung floor, and will be an acoustically protected space, that local community groups can hire. In line with the colour theme of the school, external materials were chosen from a palette of warm reds and earthy shades. Red is a key part of the schools history, and character, which is why red handmade bricks and tinted red mortar form the upper storeys. feature panel detailing will grace the front façade, and the lower storeys will have darker red bricks. A highly aesthetic front of building will be the result of an impressive two storey vertical picture window.
The timescale of this 733m2 east London private school project is not yet known.
Woodford Green was designated as a conservation area in 1970 by both the London Boroughs of Redbridge & Waltham Forest. The area is protected due to the amount of listed buildings in and around the location. Conservation areas also usually have special historic and architectural interest, and fall under strict planning guidelines. Certain changes may be allowed, as long as the best features of the area are not impacted. Any new extensions or alterations must be sympathetic to the surroundings and either enhance or preserve their character.
