The High Street
The High Street improvements, have allowed people to enjoy the town centre to its fullest and increased the spacious feel of the area. The project has provided new attractive paving, banished clutter and upgraded bus shelters. A dedicated taxi rank has been added, and there are permanent disabled parking bays. Vehicles are unable to drive through the town centre thanks to strategically placed bollards. Less cars means the bus service for residents and visitors is faster and more efficient.
Watford Shopping Centre Refurb
A £180 million pound extension and redevelopment project has transformed this part of Watford into a 1.4 million sq ft retail, catering and leisure destination. The council-owned Charter Place Shopping Centre has been redeveloped and integrated with the existing refurbished intu Watford shopping centre. This has allowed Watford to join Bristol and Edinburgh as one of the top 20 shopping destinations in the UK. There are now numerous entertainment venues and spaces, along with contemporary shops restaurants, a bowling alley and cinema.
One of the main construction projects currently going on in central Watford is the regeneration of the High Street.
As well as a major repaving project designed to improve the quality of the ground itself, there will also be big changes to the way the street currently operates. Traffic between Market Street and Clarendon Road will be reduced, and it’s possible that buses will be included in this following the outcome of a review.
It’s going to become harder to park in the area as a result of the work, but it will be much easier to walk around it thanks to the crafting of a new pedestrian-focused environment.
The project began earlier in 2018, and is set to have a fast turnaround: in order to coincide with the completion of other local construction projects.
All sorts of parties are involved in the work on the High Street, including Hertfordshire County Council, global construction firm Laing O’Rourke, Watford Business Improvement District and more.
Intu has long since been a major part of Watford’s shopping and leisure scene, and the £180m refurbishment project which it’s currently undergoing is set to make it even better.
The project, which began in 2015, covers well over one million square feet worth of space. Major household names are set to move into the shopping side of the development, including Debenhams, and figures from Watford council suggest that once the redevelopment is complete then Watford will enter the list of the top 20 British shopping destinations.
Aside from shopping, there are also lots of leisure opportunities on offer including a 1,500 seat cinema operated by Cineworld and a bowling alley operated by Hollywood Bowl. And when it comes to restaurants, the space opened up by this highly ambitious construction project will create room for some of Britain’s favourite chains including TGI Fridays and Yo! Sushi.
And as well as the expansion, there’ll be a £13m upgrade to existing areas of the site as well. The car park will benefit from some renovation, while the toilets, lighting system and more will also be refurbished too.
“Every area of the centre is being redesigned and redeveloped as we get ready to launch our new extension,” said Rebecca Ryman, who is regional managing director at intu.
