Epping Forest District Council and Essex County Council are planning changes to Waltham Abbey in Essex. They are proposing to combine the museum and library buildings in Sun Street. The project is still at the consultation stage, but will provide the Waltham Abbey local area with a community and cultural hub.
The new centre will cater for young and old, with areas and attractions for young’uns and local heritage info. Health and wellbeing will be big on the agenda, encouraging all ages to socialise, access leisure and learn all about culture and the arts. A spokesperson for Epping Forest District Council said: “We want this new community and cultural hub to become the ‘go to’ place for local residents, helping to support the regeneration of Waltham Abbey town centre through new and additional footfall to Sun Street”.
Waltham Abbey Leisure Centre has a beautiful new 6 lane, 25m swimming pool and learner pool for locals to splash about in! There is also a sauna, steam room, 80 station fitness suite, spin studio, two multi purpose studios, café and viewing area. Pozzoni Architecture were awarded the contract for the project by Epping Forest District Council and Places Leisure. The building is fully Sport England compliant despite having one of the lowest circulation levels in the UK. It has a green roof above the pool which conjures up parkland scenes.
Martin Anderson of Places Leisure said: “We have worked with Pozzoni for 20 years. Waltham Abbey typifies the level of commitment, support, leisure knowledge and design which keeps us wanting to work with them. The speed of approach, quality of solution, technical knowledge and understanding of operator needs led to a fast and high-quality building which helped us to win this contract. The scheme is ultra-efficient in plan with minimal circulation, yet at the same time feels light and generous in space. We would happily recommend Pozzoni for any leisure project”.
Architects Studio LK were asked to produce a vision plan for Waltham Abbey regeneration, aimed at delivering 250 new homes. Set to the west of Waltham Abbey the development is hoped to improve the town. The two key themes of the proposal include Waltham Abbey’s culture and heritage of food growing. Waltham Abbey is well known for historically producing a large amount of London’s fruit and veg, in glass houses. The project will establish this location as a national centre of excellence in food growing. Regeneration of its important historic centre will hopefully attract long stay visitors. As part of an Enquiry by Design workshop, the themes emerged as a result of collaborating with local stakeholders.
In addition to the 250 home development, the vision strategy will see six regeneration and new build projects across Waltham Abbey. Other projects intended for Waltham Abbey will include two additional neighbourhood centres, improvements to landscaping and connections on green land between the Lea Valley and Epping Forest.
