Heathrow Airport may be located on the other side of Greater London to Rainham. But there’s a plan underway for some of the work on future Heathrow expansion projects to be completed here in the town.
Havering Council said that it wants to host some of the construction process in the Beam Reach area located near the A13. The area is already a mini hub for the transport industry, and there are around 70 transport firms already headquartered there.
The plans are beginning to take off. In June, representatives of Heathrow were at SEGRO Park in Rainham in order to take a look at the facilities on offer.
There are, however, around 65 other sites which are also bidding for the job – which may mean that Rainham loses out.
The construction work would of course be off-site, although it’s not yet completely clear what activities are likely to go on in the area if the bid gets approved.
“It’s great to be shortlisted and we will be demonstrating all the reasons we think this site would be an ideal location for one of Heathrow’s Logistics Hubs,” said Damian White, the leader of Havering Council.
“Whichever way you look at this, Havering is special. We have the connections, infrastructure, and skilled workforce, coupled with drive and ambition, to make this a success,” he added.
One of the key advantages of the wider Rainham area is that it could incorporate use of the River Thames as an east-west link between Heathrow and the area.
The local MP, Julia Lopez – who is backing the bid – said: “The hub would reignite use of the River Thames to transport parts to Heathrow and it would connect Rainham to the growing ports of Tilbury and London Gateway, placing Havering as the link between London and trade with the rest of the world.”
The bid to regenerate parts of Rainham was successful, with a public enquiry expected to be held later this year . This major project has taken some time, as there have been some complications along the way. Questions of ownership have presented problems for some of the proposed regeneration areas. Beam Park and Clarion at Somerfield feature prominently in the development plans, which include a new station at Beam Park. A total of nine strategic housing development sites have been identified with an access site leading to the new station. Occupiers and landowners have been in talks with the local Council to discuss the process and options for relocation.
A local further education institute is looking forward to the arrival of a new construction centre at its site.
Planning permission has been given by the local authority for a new Construction, Infrastructure Skills and Innovation Centre (or CISIC) at the Rainham campus of Havering College, which is located on New Road.
The college will teach everything from engineering knowledge to construction skills, and work is now set to begin on the site – which is located by the Tesco Extra.
Rainham is clearly a busy place when it comes to construction work, and that means there’s a lot of contractors working on these jobs too.
