A local shopping centre could be about to receive a new lease of life after it was bought up by a property developer – who is looking to turn it into a multi-purpose development.
Grays Shopping Centre, on Crown Road, was purchased earlier in 2018 by the firm NewRiver. The sale price is believed to have been about £20.2 million, which is considered by many in the area to be low.
NewRiver has a range of ideas in place about what the new development might consist of. It plans to open up a range of leisure facilities for locals and for those from out of town, including a hotel and a gym.
Shoppers will still be able to benefit from the redeveloped centre, meanwhile, as there are plans in place for a supermarket.
According to NewRiver, the new consumer facilities will be “budget” or “discount” in nature.
And with the site believed to be earmarked for 300 new homes, too, there’s hope that the development could help ease some of the housing problems the area faces.
In a statement, NewRiver said that its ideas fit with the plans laid out by the local authority, Thurrock Council.
“These plans are in line with the Grays town centre framework, produced by Thurrock Council, and NewRiver will work closely with them in redeveloping the site, while continuing to receive an attractive income return throughout the planning stage,” the firm said.
A countryside site near a major road in Grays has been earmarked for the development of a new school.
The new school, Orsett Heath Academy, will be built on a field of land just near Stanford Road, which is also known as the A1013. The area belongs to the local authority.
The new school will be large in size, and it aims to have eight classes for each year group. Overall, more than one thousand pupils will attend the school once it opens.
There may be some challenges on the horizon for Orsett Heath before it even gets off the ground, as there’s a possibility the Lower Thames Crossing – a planned major new road – may be built in the area.
But the organisation behind the scheme are looking to ensure that the school’s planned opening will go ahead. The school will be a free school, run by the South West Essex Community Education Trust.
Other new schools are planned for the area, too. Treetops Special School, for example, is looking to build a new building on Buxton Road in order to accommodate more students.
