Aspects of this project have been a little uncertain, after a public consultation raised concerns about how the work may affect the Epping Forest Special Area of Conservation. This particularly involved the proposed modifications to Loughton library, which has caused a bit of a public outcry. Further talks and meetings are expected throughout 2020 before final decisions are made.
Epping has long since been known as a desirable place to live, but it’s about to get even more desirable thanks to a number of new home building projects which are due to take place in the coming months and years.
Some of Epping’s current public buildings are going to be converted into homes as part of the plan. Epping Library, which is located on St John’s Road, is about to be redeveloped – and once complete, it will house 11 new residential properties.
In a similar vein, some of the town’s civic offices – which are located on the High Street – will be converted into 44 new properties. And Epping Sports Centre, which is located on Hemnall Street, will now become 43 new properties.
Epping has a number of car parks at the moment, and some of these are also going to be utilised for homes. The Bakers Lane car park just off the High Street is going to have just over 30 all-new homes erected on it, while the car park on Cottis Lane will play host to 47 properties.
And there’ll be some very convenient new properties located at the car park by Epping London Underground station, where almost 90 properties will be built.
Overall, these developments amount to 265 new properties – meaning that the supply of housing in the Epping area is definitely about to go right up.
This information was shared with locals as part of the Epping Forest Local Plan, published late last year.
Epping is a bustling and thriving place, and it’s also a hub for construction activity too.
Building developments – such as new housing estates – are, after all, often required here in order to keep pace with the rate of change.
And thanks to the Epping Town Neighbourhood Plan, local residents will have their say on how the construction of new buildings in the Epping area is set to play out over the next few years.
Residents will be able to give their views on a variety of relevant issues, including how the plans may affect everything from green spaces to where they’ll park their cars.
The Mayor of Epping, Nigel Avey, suggested that it would be possible to both build new constructions while also keeping Epping’s historic charm in place.
“Epping Town Council appreciates that Epping will be required to grow over the coming years and wants to positively influence that growth to protect the character of our historic town,” he said.
“We are keen to protect a mix of dwellings to reflect the needs of local residents and for these reasons the council chose to prepare a Neighbourhood Plan,” he added.
