Regeneration and redevelopment are more important than ever these days, as the government has stated that high streets failing to adapt face the risk of disappearing altogether. A planning application for the redevelopment of the Westgate area of Dartford including affordable homes, was approved in 2018. The process of public consultation is currently ongoing, with a ‘preferred options’ document showing the proposed approach. Public drop-in events will also be held and the deadline for gathered data is set at late February 2020.
A key area of Dartford town centre is going to be redeveloped after the local authority and a major housing body signed a multi-million pound deal to turn it around.
The Westgate area of the town, located to the west of Dartford railway station, will be turned into a multi-purpose complex containing everything from leisure facilities to residential properties.
It’s all part of a major agreement between Dartford Borough Council and the affordable housing public body Homes England, who have together appointed a contractor – Muse – for the work.
The new development has been designed by architecture firm TP Bennett.
New homes will form a large part of the development, and it is believed there will be up to 140 built during the regeneration.
A wide range of new facilities will be brought to the area as part of the scheme. These include an all-new cinema, a large open public space and a new car park designed with a multi-storey layout for maximum capacity.
There will also be a hotel with over 100 bedrooms.
In addition to these confirmed plans, the new scheme may also include further community facilities including healthcare provisions.
The entire scheme is still subject to planning permission. If approved, it is believed that work will begin at the end of next year (2019).
Council bosses were optimistic about the future of both the town and this development.
“There is a new energy to Dartford that’s being driven by local demand. A new community has united with a decent and loyal existing community to change the face of the Town,” said the Leader of the local council, Jeremy Kite.
“That is why the Westgate Scheme is so important to us – a new leisure quarter with a cinema and a range of facilities that will further strengthen the town’s offer,” he added.
Those behind the development of almost 200 new homes in the Lowfield Street area of Dartford say they are about to get started.
Meyer Homes, a developer which has planning permission to redevelop the site, has said it is in the process of carrying out the investigations required before work could begin.
“We have been working hard to instruct and carry out all the surveys and investigative works required to enable a start on site, these are now concluded and a physical start on site is imminent,” said a Meyer Homes spokesperson.
The area, to the south of the town centre, was also earmarked for a Tesco store.
However, the supermarket chain announced that it was withdrawing its plans and would no longer build in the area.
