An all-new Enterprise Centre designed to give building firms and others involved in construction the space they need to run their businesses is on the way for Witham.
When built, the Witham Enterprise Centre will deliver not just a space to work – but crucial support for small businesses as they evolve.
It follows a centre which already exists over in Braintree, which is located at the Springwood Drive Industrial Estate.
This centre, which provides small workspaces and other units which are rented out to a variety of businesses, is being used as a partial model for the centre in Witham.
These centres offer space to companies across all sectors, but tend to prioritise construction businesses.
A variety of funders and backers have already thrown their weight behind the Witham centre. And there are also plans afoot to launch an Innovation Centre in the area, too – which will provide even more support.
The idea for the Innovation Centre is being spearheaded by Braintree Council, which is designing the plans.
Essex County Council, meanwhile, is believed to have promised almost £2 million to help get the idea off the ground.
The timeframe for the development may in large part be determined by the county council’s decision, and the funding it has provided lasts from 2019 to 2021.
It is believed that the Witham Innovation Centre may also be part-funded by a possible European grant.
Local decision-makers said the plans offered both help for businesses and for local workers.
“We are looking at a number of options to provide an innovation centre to support a European funding bid for the construction sector,” said Tom Cunningham, the Cabinet Member for Economic Development on Braintree District Council.
“We are also committed to the creation of an Enterprise Centre in Witham to help support and grow businesses as well as create more employment opportunities for residents,” he added.
A number of new homes with affordable rents in Halstead have now been filled.
The twenty-two new homes, which were developed by housing association Colne and are located just off Colchester Road, have been allocated to those who were on Braintree District Council’s housing register.
Colne funded the project, and the development was aided by Braintree District Council and Iceni Homes.
A range of housing options are available in the development, including flats and semi-detached houses.
The area also includes a bungalow which has been optimised for residents who experience additional mobility needs.
Local leaders said the move was a very positive development for the area.
“We are always pleased to work in partnership with Colne Housing,” said Councillor Lynette Bowers-Flint, who is Cabinet Member for Planning and Housing on Braintree District Council.
“This development opportunity meets one of our main priorities – to provide local residents with much-needed affordable housing.”
