The area around the Royal Docks and Beckton Riverside are seeing some ongoing changes this year, with a number of upgrades and developments. Locals will see the appearance of new homes, safe places to play, shopping and community facilities. There have been extensive consultations about the plans, allowing residents and business owners in the locations to voice their ideas and opinions. The Royal Docks is the only Enterprise Zone in London, and is expected to be a leading example of regeneration. The project has been organised by the Mayor of London and the Mayor of Newham. Both have ensured that local people and businesses have been involved at every stage.
The Mayor of London has also created an overall plan for the wider area including the Enterprise Zone surroundings. The Royal Docks and Beckton Riverside Opportunity Area is one of London’s most substantial regeneration projects. There is room for 30.000 new homes and 41,500 new jobs which can be implemented over the next 20 years. The scheme will provide guidance on the placement of homes, jobs and infrastructure up to 2041.
Yet more work has focussed on the Beckton area, as Beckton Docklands Light Railway has been undergoing extension work. The Buckingham Group won a £35m contract, they will deliver this as part of a £100m package. This will cover the Northern Siding project including the building of a new carriage washer. Stabling and maintenance work is also being carried out before the introduction of a new fleet of DLR trains.
Emeg have developed a state of the art eWash machine which harvests rainwater and wash recycled water. This will bring efficiency and an eco friendly solution to the new structures. A £45m project is still out to tender, and will encompass design, and fit out of the new maintenance facility and track connections. The work had a completion date of March 2022.
A Beckton sewage works contract worth £80m has been awarded to Laing O’Rourke, who carried out a £140m upgrade in 2014 for Thames Water. At Beckton, they will deliver new inlet works, also extended aeration lanes and settlement tanks. Thames Water have invested £123m all together into the full project. Beckton already has the largest sewage treatment works in Europe, but will soon be required to deal with wastewater from the Thames Tideway sewer currently under construction.
The upgrade will take place over a period of 3 years, and Laing O’Rourke’s head of UK infrastructure, Declan McGeeney, said: “Six years ago, we delivered a substantial upgrade to Beckton and we’re delighted Thames Water has trusted us to return. The project will maximise the use of digital engineering and off-site manufacture, with every detail of the works being built virtually before the real thing. He added: “Many of the tanks, such as the walls of the new activated sludge plant, will be built at our factory in Nottinghamshire before being transported for assembly on site. These modern methods of construction help us to deliver six months faster than traditional methods would allow.”
