As part of our range we offer cement mixers for hire, in a choice of sizes and capacities to suit all projects. Whatever you need the cement or concrete for, choosing the correct equipment for the job is important. Whether it’s one or two bags of cement for your driveway in Brentwood, or a substantial amount for a bigger undertaking, a cement mixer is a great help.
Speed is of the essence with most building contracts or even DIY tasks, and a faster process can limit disruption and save time and money. Mixing cement or concrete, especially larger amounts by hand, can be tedious, backbreaking and time consuming. Some form of mechanical means is favourable to carry out the blending, giving smooth and even results. This is where our range of cement mixers for hire come in.
The basic mixing procedure is the same despite the type of work you are undertaking, including creating a few steps for the garden or pouring the foundations of a building. A bigger job needs a larger sized mixer, as it’s easier to prepare the mix all at once giving an even consistency. Some models of cement mixer are able to mix bulk quantities in a matter of minutes, removing the hard work from the process.
Smaller or medium sized projects will benefit from using a tip up mixer, specially designed to handle easily, while giving a great performance. Once the mix is done it is simply tipped into a wheelbarrow or other carrier. Choose a mixer that can be used on rough uneven ground, and in awkward or tight spaces. Check that the equipment has safety features too in order to avoid mishaps.
Most cement mixers are fairly straight forward, but still you should always read the operating instructions, or ask our friendly team for guidance. It’s advisable to wear the appropriate clothing when using any kind of construction equipment. Sleeves and pants should be long, and shoes must not have any part of the foot exposed. Gloves and safety goggles are also a good idea in case of skin irritation or flying particles.
Before work commences, make sure your mixer is on a level surface and there is a water supply handy. Even if tempted, do not overload the mixer, as this can be dangerous, and ensure that you add the correct quantities of sand, cement and water. If it is too wet or too dry it will be difficult to work with and will not dry correctly. This could mean having to redo the area, otherwise the project may be ruined. A good mix is one that does not slosh around the drum or crumble during mixing. More water or concrete may be added if required to achieve the desired consistency.
When operating the mixer keep hands out of the way, and do not put tools inside the barrel either. It’s a good idea to have the assistance of a few other people when ready to pour, they can hold the wheelbarrow steady and use a shovel to guide the cement as the mixer is tipped. Keep people informed about the wet concrete by using a sign, and do not use the area until the concrete has set hard. Touching it or walking on it before it is properly dry may mean you have to start over again!
The cement mixer has to be cleaned before the cement dries, as it’s just about impossible to remove later when hardened. Add water and a little sand to the mixer and turn it on, repeating with just clean water. Concrete can be transformed into practical structures or even pieces of artwork, all made simple with a cement mixer! Take a look at our selection of mixers and other plant hire services.
