Some areas in Essex are positively buzzing with activity, as a number of extremely positive building projects continue in parts of Thurrock like Grays and South Ockendon. Thurrock council are committed to providing affordable housing for many, while ensuring that an alternative to automatic demolition is in place wherever possible. Housing development schemes these days try to concentrate on a program of estate regeneration. This brings down costs while providing a more sustainable and usually faster construction solution.
The Echoes at Seabrooke Rise, Grays and Bruyns Court, South Ockendon where the first affordable housing schemes to be completed in the area in 2016, delivering 78 homes. A further 128 homes are due to be completed at St Chads in Tilbury in 2017. But that’s not the end of the good news for those hoping to purchase their home in places like Grays, as a second wave of housing developments are set to appear in and around these Essex locations.
Regenerating a group of properties as opposed to immediate demolition and rebuild, is one of 11 principles outlined in guidance relating to the projects. Many residents complain to councillors that their accommodation is unfit for modern living. Councillor Gerard Rice stated that; “Some estates were built before central heating, washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers and other appliances that cause damp and mould. The council must make sure that any new housing is suitable for modern life and meets the needs of its residents.” Another of the principles incorporated within these building schemes proposes that, where desired, existing tenants must be given the right to return to a property at the same location.
